The True Measure of a Soul: Beyond Status and Appearance

The True Measure of a Soul: Beyond Status and Appearance

How do we determine the value of a person? Is it by their status, race, wealth, or beauty?

If someone makes it to the cover of a magazine—as my daughter Savannah did—does that make that person more valuable? The way we look at people is often radically different from how God looks at them. While we focus on the surface, He sees the heart.

"...for the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart." 1 Samuel 16:7

The Shift in Perspective

Once upon a time—a few heartbeats ago—when my husband was a pastor, we were invited by members of our church to a meeting in another community. We were introduced to a couple who, quite obviously, weren't the least bit interested in us. They barely glanced our way as we said hello.

The transformation was dramatic. When they were informed that my husband was the new pastor at our friends' church, they suddenly smiled and gushed "hello" as they grabbed our hands to welcome us. In an instant, we had "value" in their eyes. We hadn't changed, but their perception of our status had. We were suddenly worth their attention. It was so shallow—and so sad.

A Level Playing Field

I am deeply thankful for that object lesson. I believe every person is valuable and worthy of respect and honor, no matter who they are. The child growing up in squalor is just as much a beloved treasure to God as the rich man driving by in his Mercedes.

  • One day, we will all stand before God.

  • All the playing fields will be level; kings will stand with paupers.

  • God’s love, grace, and mercy extend to everyone.

  • You are more loved than you could possibly imagine.

"For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved." — John 3:16-17

Your Infinite Worth

He gave His life for you because of your worth to Him. From an unborn child to someone with a disability, to the elderly, and every variation along the way—from conception to death—you carry the image of God. You

Blessings, Beloved of God.
