How do we determine the value of a person? Is it by status? Race? Wealth? Beauty? If they make it to the cover of a magazine (like my daughter Savannah did) does that make them more valuable? How we look at people is radically different from how God looks at people. He sees the heart. "...for the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart."1 Samuel 16:7
Once upon a time—a few heartbeats ago—when my husband was a pastor—we were invited by people in our church to a meeting in another community. We were introduced to a couple who obviously were not in the least bit interested in us. They barely glanced at us as we said hello. They were then informed my husband was the new pastor at our friends' church. The transformation was dramatic. The people smiled and gushed hello as they grabbed our hands to welcome us.
Suddenly we had value in their eyes. We hadn't changed—apparently we suddenly seemed valuable in their eyes because of their new perceptions of our "status". We suddenly became worth their attention. So shallow. So sad.
I am so thankful for that object lesson. I believe every person is valuable and worthy of respect and honour—no matter who they are. The child growing up in squaller is just as much a beloved treasure to God as the rich man driving by in his Mercedes. One day we will all stand before God. All the playing fields will be level—kings will stand with paupers.
God's love and grace and mercy extends to all people—every person is valuable to Him. You are more loved than you could possibly imagine. "For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved." John 3:16-17
He gave His life for you because of your worth to Him. No matter who—an unborn child—someone disabled—an elderly person—every variation along the way—from conception to death—you carry the image of God and are infinitely precious. Blessings, Beloved of God.
